Storing Food In The Fridge

How To Store Food In The Refrigerator

The refrigerator is a fantasitc device. There are many ways you can optimize the use of your refrigerator to get the most out of your food, and of course better food = a better life, right?

Things To Pay Attention To:

  • The optimum temperature for to store refrigerator food is 4ºC, and is the temperature your fridge is optimized for also.

  • Put your food in containers: it may be annoying and take up more time and space, but it's a lot better to keep perishable foods this way. To ensure you food is safe from drying out, or being exposed to bacteria, smells, or tastes that can ruin your food, invest in some good, air-tight containers.

  • Keep leftovers for only 2-3 days. After food is prepared, it is recommended to only keep leftovers for no more than 2-3 days in your fridge. The risk of spoilage and harmful substances after two days increases more and more. A tip is to write the date onto disposable bags or onto paper labels for plastic containers. This way, you can guarantee not to eat something that could make you ill.

  • Allow food to cool out of the fridge. Not only is this natural cooling better for your food, it also means your refrigerator doesn't have to work hard to get the temperature down. However, it is recommended not to leave your food cooling for over two hours (one in warmer climates) as harmful bacteria can spread quickly when food is left on the countertop.

  • Use an anti-mould mat in your fruit/vegetable tray. This helps to keep your fruits and vegetables fresh for longer. Don't want to spend the money? Well, what actually makes your veggies mould faster is the moisture on and around them. You can also take the veg out of the packaging, dry off any excess moisture with kitchen roll, then place into your fridge. This will help your foods stay fresh for longer.

Pay Attention to Where You Place Different Foods:

Did you know that particular foods should be kept in different places in the fridge for optimum storage? These tips will help you get the most out of your foods:

  • Raw products are best kept at the bottom of the fridge. The temperature is at its lowest there, and therefore your raw meats stay fresh for longer in the colder temperatures.

  • Keep raw foods away from the prepared/manufactured, ready to eat foods. Seemingly obvious, but it's best to keep raw foods like fish and meat products away from foods that are alreadu ready to eat.

  • Don't push your vegetables to the back. Veggies contain a lot of moisture and when pressed up against the back panel - the coldest part of your fridge - they can freeze. This can have several effects, including resulting in your foods going off quickly, as when they defrost, the perishing process is actually sped up. No one wants their veg squishy and mouldy.
