How To Fix A Leaking Dishwasher

How To Fix A Leaking Dishwasher

Not only can a leaking dishwasher cause flooding, but it can also put other electrical appliancers at risk with electrical currents being exposed to water. Below, you can find some examples that may be causing your dishwasher to leak:

  • A defective pump or pump seal may be the cause of your issue. Your pump allows water to circulate around and drain from your machine. The pump will also be situated with some form of rubber gasket that seals it tightly into the bottom of the machine. Both sections of the pump - the wash and drain compartments - will also both have seals to prevent leakages. All of these seals can wear down, or become defective, and so may need replacing, otherwise water can escape from your machine. These kinds of leaks may not be as noticable, and you can only see the cause after removing the access panel at the front of the dishwasher. If is essential to keep an eye on the condition of your seals and pump as obviously you don't want water leaking into your machine or damaging the surrounding area.

  • Drips or even puddles collecting underneath the door is a definite sign of a faulty door. This could be becuase the door latch is loose or misaligned, which happens with time because of the movement of the machine. It can be fixed however with by simply tightenting loose screws with a screwdriver. It could also be the cause of loose door hinges. Again adjustment or replacement can help make sure they fit firmly in place to prevent water escaping from the dishwasher. Hinges can also get bent, and this can not only potentially damage your machine when opening/closing the door, it can prevent the door from shutting properly, therefore the water could leak out.

  • If water appears to be leaking around the front of the dishwasher, it is most likely to be a worn out seal that is the cause. Made out of rubber or vinyl, these materials - after time - can become less flexible or even brittle. This then can easily be damaged, and therefore your door will not seal properly. And again, this will most likely cause - of course - a leak. Unfortunately, there is no way to repair a seal, so it is best to replace it as soon as you see a problem occuring to prevent any major leaks or damage.

  • Loose connections and damaged pipes could also be the cause for your leaks. Make sure you chek all your pipes and connections like the tightness of valves. Make sure nothing is blocked, or any pipes are kinked. If the water is unable to flow properly, a build-up of water can be caused, which can then cause an overflow.

  • An unbalanced dishwasher can also result in leaking. To test the level of your dishwasher, open the door and place a spirit level on the base of the machine. If it isn't level, it is best to pull out the dishwasher and make the necessary adjustments.

  • An old tub can become worn out over time. Detergent and minerals in the water can cause corrosion and therefore a hole may develop. Obviously a hole will cause leakage, and although sometimes it can be fixed, in most cases the whole machine will need replacing. The tub is the major structure of the machine, and it is too impossible to replace without deconstructing your whole machine, then rebuilding it.

To find spare parts compatible with your specific dishwasher, you will need the model (type) number. This is usually made up of a combination of numbers and letters and can be found on the type plate which can be located on the inside of the dishwasher door, or all the way at the bottom (under the door, almost on the floor). In our shop, if you search by this number, you will be shown all the parts we have available that are suitable for your machine.
