How To Fix A Dishwasher That Won't Fill With Water

When your dishwasher won't fill, it can be an extremely annoying and not to mention make life a lot harder when you have to start hand washing your dishes again. However, don't rush to a serviceman just yet, as repairing your dishwasher can be fairly simple. Here you will find some possible causes on the reasons behind your dishwasher problem, and some tips on how you can fix it yourself without the expensive repair costs.

  • It could be an issue with the water inlet valve. This is used to fill the dishwasher with the correct amount of hot water, and it is controlled by the electronic control panel or the timer. It is usually located behind the lower access panel and will have two wires attached to it, as well as an outlet hose to the tub and a hot water inlet from the household supply. This is the first thing to check when your dishwasher isn't filling, checking the inlet supply to verify that you have enough water pressure and that you have the correct amount of power directed to the valve during the fill portion of the cycle. If these are all fine, then it is the fault of the valve and therefor it is best to replace the part. If there isn't any power reaching the valve, then it is most likely the float switch, the timer, or the electronic control switches that are causing the problems. All of these can be checked with a multi-meter.

  • The float - which is located at the bottom of the dishwasher - determines the water level. It mainly acts as a safety device to prevent overfilling, as when the proper level of water is reach the float will trigger the float switch to turn off the water inlet valve. Check that there are no objects or debris obscuring the process of the float, and that it engages the float switch located beneath the tub.

  • If the float itself is fine, it could be the float switch that has the problem. When this switch is triggered, power to the water intel is interrupted, and then of course water stops coming into the machine. Check the mechanical action to the switch is operating properly and the wire connections are secure. To check it is working, remove the wires and test for continuity with a multi-meter.

To find spare parts compatible with your specific dishwasher, you will need the model (type) number. This is usually made up of a combination of numbers and letters and can be found on the type plate which can be located on the inside of the dishwasher door, or all the way at the bottom (under the door, almost on the floor). In our shop, if you search by this number, you will be shown all the parts we have available that are suitable for your machine. Read here if you're having trouble finding your type number.
