How To Fix A Smelly Vacuum Cleaner

Is The Dust Bag Full?

The most common and obvious reason for unpleasant odors from your vacuum is that the dust bag is full. Usually, you only replace the vacuum bag once it's full (evident also when the power of the machine's suction is reduced as well). However, if there is a foul smell when you use your vacuum, first try replacing the vacuum bag to hopefully get rid of the source of the smell.

Changing The Bag

Sometimes a messy job, changing the bag can vary model to model. However, instructions are usually included on the packaging of the vacuum cleaner bag, as well as in the user manual of the machine. After taking out the old bag - but before placing in the new one - it is advisable to remove any dust residue from the cleaner itself and spray disinfectant detergent into the vacuum cleaner. Clean All Components

Most people don't think to also check the hose and the mouth of the vacuum. If the hose is plastic, then it is possible to soak it in warm, soapy water overnight to completely clean this part. However, if these are metal parts on your vacuum and this is not possible, you can use a disinfectant spray to clean the parts. Thoroughly clean the mouth and other components of the machine, checking for any sources of unpleasant odours.

What Not To Use?

It's important not to use any deodorising items in the vacuum like flea collars. These have chemicals that are hazardous and will be dispersed into the air when the vacuum is being used. Eliminating the source of the odor is the most important and best permanent solution, so focus on killing any bacteria, mould, or spores that might be growing in the vacuum cleaner.
